2023 Ford Bronco vs. Chevy Blazer: Compare Midsize SUVs in Fremont

When Ford first unveiled the new Ford Bronco, the fanfare was enormous, with enthusiasts celebrating the return of a 4x4 icon after 25 years. Today, three years into its sixth-gen run, the legendary off-roader has proven the hype was more than justified. But beyond its out-of-bounds capabilities, the Bronco is an impressively accommodating daily driver, offering roomy accommodations, plentiful practicality, and appealing features.

The Ford Bronco is an adventure-seekers dream and one of the most compelling midsize SUVs in the segment. The 2023 Bronco is so good at what it does, Car and Driver awarded it a perfect 10/10 rating and the model's second consecutive 10Best award. To provide some context, here's a quick look at how the 2023 Ford Bronco compares to another class competitor with a reinstated nameplate, the Chevy Blazer.

2023 Ford Bronco vs. Chevy Blazer: Performance

Under the hood, the Ford Bronco is propelled by a lively 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine producing 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. Power runs to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Or, if you prefer a more hands-on experience, you can select the 7-speed Getrag manual transmission. The Chevy Blazer's 2.0-liter turbo-four (228 hp, 258 lb-ft; 9-speed auto) has less power and pairs with standard front-wheel drive.

Are you seeking something even more potent to power your Port Clinton commute? The Bronco's 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 (330 hp, 415 lb-ft; 10-speed only) is standard in Wildtrak and Heritage Limited and available to most other trims. And if somehow that's still not enough, you can get a 3.0-liter turbo-V6 (418 hp, 440 lb-ft) in the fire-breathing Bronco Raptor. The Chevy Blazer offers an optional 3.6-liter V-6. But with 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, it trails behind even the Bronco's base four-cylinder.

2023 Ford Bronco vs. Chevy Blazer: Capability

The Ford Bronco started its run in the 60s as a civilian off-roader, a true body-on-frame "Sports Utility" model. Its intentions remain the same today, boasting all the terrain-conquering advancements 57 years of innovation can bring. One example is the Terrain Management System with up to eight selectable G.O.A.T. modes, enabling enthusiasts of all skill levels to Go Over Any Terrain. Standard features include HOSS 1.0 suspension, a selectable part-time 4x4 system, and settings for Normal, Eco, Sport, Sand, and Slippery. Higher trims include equipment like Bilstein dampers, FOX shocks, e-lockers, bigger all-terrain tires, and additional G.O.A.T. settings (Mud/Ruts, Rock Crawl, Baja).

The Chevy Blazer badge used to be associated with off-road capability on truck-based models like the S-10 and, particularly, the K5. But when the Blazer name was resurrected in 2019, it returned as a unibody crossover running on the same GM Epsilon platform as the Chevy Malibu. While it does offer a sporty-looking RS model, the Blazer's low ground clearance, regular suspension, and on-road AWD system limit it to paved streets and gravel paths.

2023 Ford Bronco vs. Chevy Blazer: Accommodations and Practicality

While engineered to excel beyond the asphalt, the Ford Bronco is surprisingly adept at day-to-day transportation duties, especially in its four-door format. Taller drivers will appreciate an extra 3.5 inches of headroom and 2.1 inches of legroom compared to the Blazer. It also offers more utility with 38.3 cubic feet for cargo behind the second row and a capacious 83 cubes behind the first (Chevy Blazer: 30.5-64.2 cu ft).

Both models offer intuitive infotainment, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. But while the Blazer's 10-inch touchscreen exceeds the Bronco's standard 8-inch display, it can't match the available 12-inch screen. The Bronco also comes standard with a digital instrument cluster, which the Blazer doesn't offer.
